Top Bloke - always got time for such as me and thee. Even the missus thinks he's a decent type and she's a good judge. ;-)

Seriously though - it takes a special type to be so tallented yet so humble.

Love yer

worth pointing out that the genius of his live playing is now matched with his recorded output. there isn't a single guitarist out there who is even close to him.

Nice post I've seen on a message board about him:

Their guitarist Rob joined my band in about 1998 and played his first ever gig with us when he was about 18. We were all about 10 or more years older than him and we were just a band playing covers and original prog rock stuff in the North East for a bit of fun. He is an amazingly talented guitarist although I think the stuff he's doing now isn't showing off his true ability. He has chosen to concentrate on creating soundscapes by layering effects. Not really my cup of tea but I hope he goes on to achieve everything he can because he is one of the nicest lads you could possibly meet.

Rob *worship icon*

Obviously the bit in bold caught my eye

From a prog/covers band, they probably mean he isn't playing "impressive" tedious gurny solos. "He has chosen to concentrate on creating soundscapes by layering effects." - as if this is somehow a bad thing? Yes, a true creative talent that not everyone has, unlike boring trad-rock soloing which any fucker could probably do with sufficient practice.

It's like Picasso learning to draw and paint like a camera. then getting bored and inventing cubism.

It is a totally ace statement, except that Rob's guitar is very much not cubist. A really good post-rock guitarist like the bloke from Vessels is cubism, Rob's is a lot more abstract than that... :)

playing to the song is a skill that many guitarists never achieve, or take many years to realize. Of course he can shred and rip out mind-blowing runs up and down the neck, but it's so much more powerful when it's contrasted with tasteful playing and dynamics. I think that more than anything is what makes his style so appealing. In the tradition of McCabe and The Edge with his own unique direction and tone.

Agree 100%....I think creating tones and sonics are some the toughest things a guitarist can do. The Edge took U2 from an average band to a great one, and McCabe....Well let me just say that 'Reprise' off 'Northern soul' has to be up there as one of the greatest guitar solos ever. There's never been anything on a recorded format before or since quite like that. 6 minutes of textural bliss. Rob is definitely cut from the same cloth and may even prove to be a better and more influential presence over time. Some of the things he's able to make fly out of his amp defies explaination & I'm sure he will keep us in awe for years to come.
